Larry Hamilton, great-great grandson of Lucy Sams, authored this historical novel and compelling story of Lucy’s life during the Civil War as a slave in Madison County, Kentucky, through her flight to Camp Nelson, a haven of refuge. Lucy endures her life as a slave with little joy to be found. When she is given as a “gift” to Massa’s daughter, she realizes that she needs courage more than ever. Her new master turns threatening which forces Lucy and her family to flee to Camp Nelson where she discovers that there is a life aside from oppression. At Camp Nelson she learns to read and write with the angelic presence of the Rev. John G. Fee and discovers others who care about her people in bondage. She forms unbreakable friendships and even falls in love as she grows into womanhood amid the challenges that freedom brings. Author, Larry Hamilton, a retired teacher of African American History, resides in Piqua, Ohio. He is a founding member of the African American Genealogy Group of the Miami Valley, authored articles, presented workshops, appeared as a genealogy researcher on PBS-TV’s The History Channel, and invented the educational game, NEWS OR LOSE. “It was by no accident that I authored Lucy’s Story,” said Hamilton. He was initially inspired to write after taking a group of high school students to hear Alex Haley talk about his book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The seed was planted in 1975, but he never actually began his writing journey until 2008 when a former student contacted him about a series of Black History Month presentations he was giving at a local college. She was unable to attend due to weather, but a second letter invited him to talk with her about his family’s experiences at the Civil War Camp. She shared her interest in writing stories of that era. Hamilton’s desire to have Lucy’s story told prompted their partnership in 2008. Hamilton authored the material that was written by Christina DeLaet. You will want to read this historic account, which chronicles Lucy’s journey. Author: Larry Hamilton---Writer:
