Black genealogy group meeting...

The next meeting of the African American Genealogy Group of the Miami Valley (AAGGMV) will be Saturday, May 27, 2006, 1:00 p.m. at the Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, 1350 Brush Row Rd., Wilberforce, OH 45384-0578.

The speaker will be Dr. Carolyn Dorsey, Associate Professor Emeritus of Black Studies and Higher Education, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. who will talk about the history of “The Randolph Slaves” and their legacy. She will explain how she traced her family line from the slaves of John Randolph (1773-1833) - one of the most powerful and influential planters inVirginia, a legislative leader in the Virginia Assembly, and a cousin of Thomas Jefferson. A historical background of the Randolphs as former slaves will be presented along with a description of their present-day descendants in Ohio. Attendees who are members of this family will be invited to share their stories.

Dr. Dorsey is the biographer of “Olivia A. Davidson Washington - The second wife of Booker T. Washington”, whom she credits with co-founding The Tuskegee Institute at Tuskegee Alabama. Dr. Dorsey is a charter member of AAGGMV, a prominent educator, and an authority on black history. She is Adjunct Professor, Humanities Department (History) at Central State University, Wilberforce, OH. Dr. Dorsey also serves as a Trustee of the Dayton African American Legacy Institute, Inc., an organization to collect, preserve, and disseminate the African American history and culture of Greater Dayton.

The hostess for the meeting is AAGGMV member Velena Randolph of the Afro-American Museum. Attendees are invited to tour the museum and view the latest exhibits during their visit.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
